The Karakoram is one of the four major mountain ranges in Asia on par with the Himalayas, as well as the Hindu Kush and the Pamir Mountains, which also form one large mountainous region. The Karakoram is in the territory of Pakistan, China, India, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. The main feature of the range is that it is the second highest in the world after the neighboring Himalayas thanks to its highest and most prominent mountain, K2 (8,611 m / 28,251 ft), which, however, is ahead of Everest and others in what is considered the most difficult to climb. There are also three other peaks of more than 8,000 m (26,246 ft), as well as nearly 2,000 glaciers, including the two largest outside the Polar regions. In all, there are 570 named mountains in the Karakoram, including as many as 27 ultra-peaks with a prominence of more than 1,500 m (4,921 ft).
